Dear IEA Community

In this edition of the IEA NewsBriefs we get to celebrate the newly appointed IEA fellows. We also included an update on ILO's recent inclusion of safe and health work environments in its fundamental principles and rights at work. As always, we included some exciting upcoming events, and introduce you to another HFE society in the IEA societies spotlight feature, which takes us to the southernmost tip of the African continent, which is home to the Ergonomics Society of South Africa (ESSA).

The 18th of July was declared by the United National General Assembly as Nelson Mandela International Day. This day is an "annual celebration of Nelson Mandela's life and a global call to action for people to recognise their individual power to make an imprint and change the world around them." We believe that the HFE work that you all contribute individually and collectively as the global HFE community on a daily basis, positively influences the world of work and contributes to making the world a better place. We are thus proud to be able to provide a platform that can showcase the work that you do. In line with this, we encourage the IEA community to get in contact with the IEA NewsBriefs editor ( if you would like to include any updates on HFE related developments, events or activities in future editions.


2022 IEA Fellow Awards

IEA is pleased to announce the selection of seven new IEA Fellows:

· Robert Fox – US (HFES)

· Margo Fraser – Canada (ACE)

· Karen Jacobs – US (HFES)

· Ronald McLeod – UK (CIEHF)

· Paulo Antonio Oliveira – Brazil (ABERGO)

· Isabella Steffan – Italy (SIE)

· Wei Xu – China (CES)

This award recognizes outstanding and sustained performance in the field of ergonomics and human factors at an international level, as well as an extensive publication record in international journals or international consulting or service at a high level. Candidates must be nominated by an IEA Member Society and confirmed by the current IEA Fellows as well as by the IEA Executive Committee.

Deadlines extended! IEA/Tsinghua and IEA/Kingfar Student Award nominations closing 30 September 2022!

We are accepting nominations for the IEA/Kingfar Student Award, given annually to reward high-quality original research and applications on new and emerging HFE issues or issues specifically related to industrially developing countries (IDCs), as well as to promote a career path in HFE. Nominees can be from any country including both IDCs and developed countries.

· The submitted research achievement should have been accomplished by the nominated student prior to graduation from a doctoral program.

· The nominee must be a registered doctoral student or a doctoral candidate. Recent graduates who were awarded a doctoral degree within the past year may also be nominated for the student award.

Up to 8 PhD students/recent graduates can be recognised each year. The award amount is $1,000 for each student recipient.

The IEA/Tsinghua Award for Collaborative Human Factors/Ergonomics Education is given annually to honor persons (e.g., researchers, teachers) who, through international and/or inter-regional collaboration, have made significant and outstanding contributions to the success of postgraduate educational programs that include human factors/ergonomics (HFE) courses or substantial HFE content in the curriculum. The intent of this award is to mobilize educators worldwide for HFE education. Up to four programs may be awarded. Each program may be represented by up to two nominees.

The award consists of a monetary prize of $4,000 per selected program.

Please note: We are not accepting additional nominations for the IEA/Kingfar Early Career Researcher Award.

Getting IEA Endorsement for your next Conference

The IEA officers are aware that many federated members are struggling to get their conferences going again after two years of the pandemic. The IEA have therefore decided to waive the endorsement fee for 2022 for all federated societies. It is still necessary to provide details of the event to the IEA on the application form (Link to The officers will be happy to provide any further information about IEA endorsement of conferences, which advertises the event to the IEA community worldwide.

ILO adds "safe and healthy working environments" to the fundamental principles and rights at work

The ILO has included the right for "a safe and healthy work environment" as the fifth of their fundamental principles and rights at work. This decision means "all ILO Member States commit to respect and promote the fundamental right to a safe and healthy working environment, whether or not they have ratified the relevant Conventions."

The IEA, having worked together with ILO in many activities, believes that this is a great step forward and provides further opportunities for the HFE discipline to contribute to improving work system safety. Following this decision by the ILO, the requirement to provide a safe and healthy work environment is now on the same level as the freedom of association, elimination of all forms of forced or compulsory labour, abolition of child labour and the elimination of discrimination. We see this as an excellent opportunity to continue our work and our discussions with ILO about Ergonomics and Human Factors topics in the future. Webinar Series- The future of work and HFE from around the world: 17 August 2022, 08:00 UTC

The IEA will host the future of work and HFE around the world webinar on 17 August 2022 at 08h00 (UTC). The goal of this on-line webinar series is to bring you perspectives on the envisaged challenges arising from the Future of Work for HFE from around the World. This is the first on-line webinar in this series. The goal of this first on-line webinar in the series is to first discuss their recent paper, "State of science: the future of work – ergonomics and human factors contributions to the field", with recent examples from studies in Australia. They will then draw on examples from their New Zealand-based telehealth research. The presenters will focus on the challenges and implications for HFE in the Australian and New Zealand context.

Webinar: Telework: a decent work? 17 August 2022, 19h00

While telework is not a new concept, it has become increasingly more pervasive following the COVID-19 pandemic. With teleworking set to continue proliferating workplaces for the foreseeable future, it is prudent that we reflect on the challenges and opportunities that come with this type of work. In line with this, the IEA is collaborating with the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) on a webinar titled "Telework: a decent work" that aims to understand challenges around telework, and to discuss ways that this form of work can be improved. The webinar will take place on the 17th of August 2022 at 19h00. The language that will be used during the webinar is Portuguese, and Spanish translations will be provided. Webinar attendees will receive certificates of attendance.

7th International Digital Human Modeling Symposium (DHM 2022): 29-31 August 2022, Iowa City, USA

The 7th International Digital Human Modeling Symposium is taking place later this month between the 29th and the 31st of August 2022. The symposium will be a hybrid event occurring both online and in-person at the University of Iowa campus, Iowa City, USA. The DHM symposium will be hosted by the University of Iowa Technology Institute and organised in collaboration with the International Ergonomics Association's Technical Committee on Digital Human Modeling and Simulation. The Iowa Virtual Human Summit (IVHS) is included in the registration fee and will immediately follow DHM on August 31.

The symposium program, which can be found here: is quite comprehensive and provides a diverse range of topics that are grouped into 10 topic areas including DHM in Production Planning, DHM in Automotive, Body Shape and Anthropometry, DHM in Biomechanics, Hand Modeling, Exoskeletons, DHM Using Finite Element Modeling, DHM in Packaging, DHM Modeling Methods, and Virtual Reality and Digital Twin.

In this edition of the IEA societies spotlight feature, we profile one of the oldest IEA federated societies on the African continent, the Ergonomics Society of South Africa (ESSA). Albeit a relatively small society, ESSA continues to make significant contributions to initiatives aimed at growing the discipline and raising awareness across the African continent, and other industrially developing countries.

ESSA is a non-profit organisation and a federated member of the IEA. It was established with the objective of being an association for professionals in HFE and cognate disciplines in South Africa. Since its inception 37 years ago, ESSA has been committed to raising awareness about HFE and its benefits in South Africa and more widely on the African continent, where the discipline is still not as widely understood or implemented. Through building strategic partnerships locally with relevant government departments and allied professions, ESSA has contributed to the development of HFE legislative tools and the provision of information and resources to support the implementation of HFE in South Africa and other industrially developing nations. Internationally, ESSA collaborated with other HFE societies and facilitated the formation of ErgoAfrica (network of African Ergonomics Societies) and the BRICSplus HFE network.

Overview of ESSA activities

ESSA is one of very few IEA federated societies globally that has had its professional certification process endorsed by the IEA. This endorsement not only provides recognition of ESSA Professional Affairs Board's (PAB) certification process at an international level, but also enables ESSA certified professionals to be recognised in other parts of the world. ESSA's PAB manages the certification of registered ergonomics professionals in South Africa, while ensuring the professional and ethical practice of ergonomics in the country as recommended by the International Ergonomics Association. The PAB recognises four levels of professional certification: a Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE), a CPE-in- training, a Certified Ergonomics Associate (CEA) and a CEA-in-training. The number of certified individuals currently stands at 34.

ESSA organises and facilitates a variety of activities aimed at providing educational information and networking opportunities. This includes the ESA journal, ESSA Newsletter, the bi-annual conference, seminars and webinars. Where possible, ESSA builds strategic partnerships with relevant stakeholders with the view of facilitating access to events, services and information for its members.

ESSA membership is open to all practitioners, academics and students who are interested in HFE in South Africa, the African continent and beyond. Membership benefits include subscription to the ESA journal, the ESSA newsletter, preferential rates to access selected ESSA events, access to updates on local and international HFE opportunities including vacancies, requests for work from prospective clients, scholarship opportunities and much more.
